Download Festival Announces 19 More Bands for 2015

Download Logo

In a surprise Sunday night announcement Andy Copping and co have confirmed the addition of 19 more bands to the 2015 Download Festival line up including the likes of Billy Idol, Clutch, Eagles of Death Metal, Lamb of God and Rise Against.

Plans for the 2015 festival are well underway and the line up is starting to take shape quite nicely with these recent additions.

Billy Idol will be returning to Download for the first time in five years as part of his tour of the European festival circuit. Some fans may turn their nose up to the addition of Billy Idol, especially if “White Wedding” is their only knowledge of the Generation X icon who, in his prime, exhibited a level of hedonism that would make Motley Crue blush. Anyone who has seen Idol live will know that he puts on an impressively raw performance full of his famous sneering punk attitude. Billy Idol said:

It was a fantastic experience playing at Download 2010 in the teeming rain with the audience completely unfazed. So if that was fun, this year should be dynamite! See you there!

Groove Metal behemouths Lamb of God, who are rumoured to be releasing a new album next year, complete with lyrics written during Randy Blythe’s time on remand at Pankrac prison in Prague, will be returning from a short hiatus to bring some serious heaviness to Download fans.

Elsewhere, America’s most successful rock performer in the Billboard charts, the four times Grammy-nominated Godsmack, have been announced to appear at Download for the very first time, in 2015, following the release of their critically acclaimed “1000hp” album, earlier this year.

What has got me really excited is the announcement that balls-out, tongue-in-cheek rockers Eagles of Death Metal will also be making their Download festival debut. I love the records these guys have put out and they will add that bit of fun and humour to Download that has been serviced in recent years by Steel Panther and it will be a welcome change.

The other announcement that has got me very excited indeed is the addition of Clutch, who will be returning after a four year abscence to deliver their sermon of authenticity and cool in the sludgiest, funkiest stonery way possible. These guys always put on an amazing show and are responsible for some of my favourite albums of all time, including last year’s Earth Rocker which was my number 1 album of 2013. They still seem to be flying somewhat under the radar for some unknown reason. Make sure you go to see them as you will discover some of the finest music made in the last 20 years and I challenge you to not be mesmerised by, frontman, Neil Fallon’s shamonic on stage performance.

The full list of bands announced are as follows:

Backyard Babies

Billy Idol

Black Veil Brides

Body Count

Crown the Empire

Eagles of Death Metal

Every Time I Die

Hollywood Undead

Lamb of God

Mad Ball

Mallory Knox

Motionless in White

Parkway Drive

Rise Against

With headline appearances from Slipknot, Muse and Kiss, and main support slots for Judas Priest, Faith No More and Motley Crue, not to mention Slash, Black Stone Cherry, Five Finger Death Punch and Marilyn Manson, I think it is fair to say Download 2015 is looking very good indeed.

The full line up so far looks like this

Kiss confirmed as closing act of Download 2015

June 12-14 2015

The worst kept secret in the Rock and Metal has finally been officially confirmed. KISS will bring Download 2015 to a close when they headline the main stage on Sunday 14 June.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers have carved themselves emphatically into the pantheon of Rock mythology with their huge choruses, unmistakable visuals and extraordinary, pyrotechnical live performances. KISS return to Donington having graced Monsters of Rock in 1988 and 1996 and headlined Download, Europe’s biggest rock and metal festival, in 2008. Singer Paul Stanley sees Download as the ultimate measure of a rock band’s standing:

“Download has become a tradition of stature that separates the pretenders from the contenders and the champs from the chimps. It will be an honour to take our turf and leave no doubt why we wear the crown.”

Meanwhile, bassist Gene Simmons said:

“To all our fans – our intention is to get on that stage, blow the heavens to smithereens and take no prisoners.”

Main support comes in the form of the final ever UK Festival Performance by iconic hell-raising metalheads Mötley Crüe. With the Crüe due to disband for good in early 2016, Download will have the honour and privilege of bringing a truly unique festival career to a blazing conclusion. Bassist Nikki Sixxx said:

“It’s always an over the top day and night at Download Festival and we’re really excited to be coming over to the UK and playing the show.”

Rock legends making the ultimate festival pilgrimage don’t stop there as seminal shredder Slash polishes and shines the trusty top hat to make his second appearance at Download with one of rock’s top vocalists, Myles Kennedy, and The Conspirators. Slash said:

“Download is a very special event for me. It’s been a major destination since I started and I’m always excited to be a part of it.”

Headlining the second stage and representing the new kids on the block are electronicore pioneers Enter Shikari, after the January 2015 release of their massively anticipated album The Mindsweep. Singer Rou Reynolds is looking forward to the authentic festival experience:

“The thing I love more than anything is playing outside, at night. We thank Download for the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the great outdoors and engulf and deluge festival-goers with our noise. It is an honour to be closing the night and because of this we will bring with us illuminations. Do attend.”

These bands join a mind-blowing Download 2015 line-up that already includes headliners Slipknot and Muse. The line up confirmed so far is looking like this:

Slipknot Announced as Download 2015 Friday Headliners

Download Logo

June 12-14 2015

Slipknot Logo

Here we go again: the mighty cogs of Europe’s biggest rock and metal music festival are turning and the production line of epic live performances is thundering into life once more. Download 2015 is underway.

And what a Friday headliner it has produced…

The biggest, angriest monster of a metal band to emerge in recent years, Slipknot storm into Download Festival for the fifth time and the first since the release of their colossal new album .5: The Gray Chapter with new masks and a new, mind blowing stage show. The seven time Grammy-nominated Iowa nine have become one of the most iconic live acts in the musical world thanks to their extraordinary musicianship and dramatic, instantly recognisable aesthetic. Frontman Corey Taylor adds:

“Being invited back to Download always feels like coming home. Headlining Download, for the 3rd time, feels like the culmination of a life’s dream. It’s an honor, a privilege and we’re all looking forward to it.”

Main support comes from locally-bred Metal Gods Judas Priest. The Birmingham rockers played the first Monsters of Rock in 1980 and come to Download for a second time, having previously played in 2008. Priest are ecstatic at the prospect of renewing their longstanding acquaintance with Donington:

“35 years ago Judas Priest took the stage for the first Monsters of Rock at Castle Donington!

We are thrilled to be performing at Download 2015 as the band continues its 40th anniversary

‘Redeemer of Souls’ World Tour that brings us home to see and hear the roar of our priest family.”

Headlining the second stage on Friday are Kentucky hard rockers Black Stone Cherry. Last year’s secret band return for a full set following the success of their titanic Magic Mountain album and hugely successful UK arena tour. Speaking on their return to Donington Park, guitarist Ben Wells said:

Getting the opportunity to not only return to one of our favourite festivals, but to come back as headliners of the 2nd stage, for the 2nd time is just UNREAL!  After the recent tour we just finished in the UK, we didn’t know how to come back in a bad ass way and thanks to our friends at Download and the fans who keep us going, we’ll be back to rock your ass and give you the best show we can!  Thank you all for this opportunity. We love you and we’ll see ya in June!

Marauding alt-metallers Five Finger Death Punch also add their musical muscle to the line-up, coming to Donington for the first time since the release of last year’s blockbuster two-parter, The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell.

Download has become a key part of guitarist Zoltan Bathory’s live music calendar:

“Playing Download Festival is always a highlight for us as it is a bonafide global Rock n’ Roll destination

everyone travels to and brings their A game to….Both the bands AND the audience. You rarely see

crazy crowds like this. In fact, it is vividly etched into our memories since it was the place where we

may have broken the record for biggest crowd surfing in recorded history.  I think the migration of

Atlantic salmon took second place.”

And if that line-up doesn’t fulfil the every need of rock fans the world over, Download still has details of two more whole days of awesome headliners to announce. So watch this space…

Sonisphere Announce First Headline Acts for 2014 Return

Sonisphere Announce Iron Maiden and Metallica for 2014 Return

So at 5:30 this evening, Sonisphere made their big announcement regarding the first headline acts for their return to Knebworth next July. If you missed it, a teaser appeared out of the blue on the internet last week announcing the return of the Sonisphere festival at Knebworth following its hiatus since the 2012 event was cancelled despite having revealed Kiss, Queen and Faith No More as headliners. I thought at the time that it was a huge shame as I had really enjoyed the festival when I went to the first one in 2010 as it was a really well organised, friendly festival with a great mix of music. I was definitely going to miss it.

Given that history, it was obvious that Killimajaro, the organisers of Sonisphere were going to be looking for some huge names to headline the return and that they were going to make  massive first announcement. They certainly delivered on that front by announcing both Iron Maiden and Metallica, who will be playing their only UK dates in 2014 at the festival, as their first headliners. This is huge, they are undoubtedly the biggest metal bands in the world right now and have never shared a bill before also, as seems to be custom now, it is with the added gimmick that Metallica’s set will be “By Request” with their set list being decided by a fan vote (you just have to buy your tickets online in order to vote).

ImageIron Maiden

Despite being a big fan of both bands, I can’t help but feel underwhelmed by this announcement. It’s not that this isn’t a big announcement or that both Iron Maiden and Metallica aren’t amazing bands to have at a festival, it is just that it’s been done, they have both played major festivals in the UK numerous times in the last decade or so. Download has the same problem, none of their headliners, except possibly Avenged Sevenfold as it is their first headline festival slot, are anything new, even Avenged Sevenfold are festival regulars, just usually lower down the list.

Iron Maiden headlined the first Download in 2003, Reading and Leeds in 2005, Download 2007, Sonisphere 2010 and Download 2013. Metallica played a secret show in the tent at Download 2003 and headlined Reading and Leeds 2003, Download in 2004 and 2006, Reading and Leeds in 2008, Sonisphere in 2009 and 2011 then Download in 2012. That is 13 times in 10 years between them. Linkin Park headlined Reading and Leeds in 2003, Download in 2004 and 2007, Sonisphere in 2009 and back to Download in 2011. Aerosmith also headlined Hard Rock Calling in 2007 and Download in 2010. Even Avenged Sevenfold have played UK festivals in 2006, 2009 and 2011. We are just getting the same headline acts on a never ending sushi conveyor. When I went to Download in 2012, I didn’t even bother going to see Metallica, I chose the Union instead, who I hadn’t yet seen in contrast to the 4 times I had seen Metallica in the last 10 years. A bit of variety would be nice.

I think the problem here is conservatism, no not the political kind, the attitude kind. Promoters are just not prepared to take too many risks, they want the safe money, the bands that are guaranteed to draw hundreds of thousands of people. They are not prepared to offer bands that elevating slot from main stage warm up acts to headliners. Only twice in recent years can I remember headline choices that seemed surprising to some when first announced and that was Biffy Clyro at Sonisphere and Avengend Sevenfold at this years Download.

Still this is a huge announcement, even if a little repetitive, and I can’t wait to see how the rest of the line up turns out as Sonisphere was a really good festival and I am really glad to see it return.

Let me know what you think using this poll.

Here are a few words from those involved with next years festival.

Bruce Dickinson, Iron Maiden:

We all grew up in England well aware of the importance of the legendary concerts at Knebworth, and scarily it all seems quite recent! Without being clichéd, it really is an honor and privilege to return to play there with the purpose of celebrating some of the finest moments in British rock history from inspirational bands like Pink Floyd, The Who, Zeppelin, The Stones and Genesis.

This will be the last concert of our ‘Maiden England’ Tour and it is very fitting to end a long and hugely enjoyable tour in our own back yard. We have tweaked the ‘Maiden England’ set list a bit to make it more representative of our whole 80s era and to give the fans something a bit different, especially as this will be the last of our three tours with an historical perspective. If you are there on the day it is highly likely that you will hear some of these songs played live for the very last time ever. So on an occasion like this, a celebration and the end of a chapter, you can be sure we will do our utmost to give our fans one hell of a show and go out with all guns blazing.”

Lars Ulrich, Metallica:

This just works on all fronts:

Metallica and Knebworth, Metallica by Request, Metallica and Iron Maiden.

To be invited to co-headline the 40th anniversary celebration at the legendary Knebworth House is truly a mindf*ck. Considering the iconic bands whose performances at Knebworth are part of rock and roll history, it’s not only a next level honor, but a somewhat humbling undertaking.

And what could be more fitting on our third Knebworth go-around than to play an all-request set, chosen entirely by the fans? We are soooo excited about the limitless possibilities of our friends picking what songs Metallica get to perform on this forthcoming evening from the nearly 140 songs we’ve recorded throughout our ride. Who knows what crazy challenges will be thrown our way? Maybe a song that has never been performed live before? Maybe a few deep cuts that haven’t been aired in ages? Maybe a couple of your toe-tapping favorites? An obscure cover? Whatever happens, it will be unique, it will be special, and it’s all up to you.

Add the cherry on top…co-headlining with Iron Maiden, who are a big reason that Metallica exists in the first place. Although we haven’t played together on the same day since 1988, this is the closest we’ve come for 25 years, and for all our fans who share the same love for Iron Maiden as we, the band members do, this will hopefully amount to what many rock fans would consider a dream bill.

Team Sonisphere:

During our two year absence we’ve continued to believe in and work hard on Sonisphere. We said in 2013 that if we had the right line up then we would be back, and that’s exactly what we’ve got in 2014. The omens were obviously on our side when we secured the two biggest and best metal acts of all time in the year that also brings the 40th anniversary of the first concert at Knebworth.

Our excitement at being able to offer Metallica and Iron Maiden on the same bill for the first time ever has been hard to contain. To do so in a year of great celebration for the iconic venue is very satisfying. Sonisphere 2014 is going to be a legendary year!”

Download and Sonisphere Announcements

Download and Sonisphere Make Big Announcements

I don’t know, I’m in the deepest darkest parts of Wales for Hard Rock Hell with no internet access for half a week and both Download and Sonisphere decide to make big and in the case of Sonisphere MASSIVE announcements.

Well this is my attempt to catch up and do a quick round up of those announcements so here we go.

Download Announces New Bands

So last week, the guys out Download announced the latest bands to join headliners, Avenged Sevenfold, Linkin Park and Aerosmith and these latest announcements have gone some way to put some faith back into how the line up might look come next June.

The latest bands to join the bill are as follows:

The Offspring

Status Quo

Steel Panther

In Flames

While She Sleeps

The Black Dhalia Murder

Miss May I

Bless the Fall

A bit of something for everyone in that announcement, a bit of Punk, some Classic Rock, Metal, Hardcore and some scene bands as to be expected. I can’t really argue with any of those additions, though some may not be my ideal choices, they are all the kind of bands you would expect to see at a festival such as Download. The balance seems to be right so far, despite what ever you might think about the choice in headliners, Download is doing what it does best, catering for everyone – love it or loave it, that is what Download does.

Here is what the line up looks like so far:

Sonisphere is Back!

Well no real details at the moment on this one except that Sonisphere will be back in 2014, as the banner suggests, with three days of music at Knebworth Park between the 4th and 6th July. There is supposed to be a major announcement today so look out for another blog post on this when that comes out.

I personally am very happy about this, I went to the first Sonisphere and found it to be a very good festival, the line up was fantastic, it was very well organised and had a very good atmosphere, not to mention the cleanest field based festival toilets I have ever used and they let me cook on my barbecue which is always a plus at a festival. It was also my wife Laura’s first festival so will always have some sentimental value. Anyway, I look forward to the announcement later to see which headliners they have bagged – make sure you check back later to find out!

Pixies To Headline Field Day Festival

Also in slightly smaller festival news, The Pixies have been announced as headliners of the Field Day Festival which will be held on the 7th and 8th of June at Victoria Park in London and the Pixies will headline the second day of the event on Sunday the 8th.

Personally, I have not heard of this festival myself, but after this announcement, I will be keeping a close eye on the line up for this, now, two day festival as it has been expanded since last year. Keep checking back to see how this festival shapes up.

Interweb decides Download Line Up

Internet goes into meltdown and DYING FETUS get CONFIRMED FOR DOWNLOAD 2014Image

So the Download Festival line up announcements have started as the headliners and main support acts are revealed. The first announcement was made on Monday as corporate rock sell outs, Avenged Sevenfold were revealed as the Friday night headliners on the back of their Metallica/Iron Maiden covers album Disarm the Descent reaching number 1 in the album charts.

This was possibly the least surprising announcement ever. As a friend of mine who has his own radio show pointed out, every interview with the band this year seemed to be preparing fans for this very announcement. Despite this, the spotty, overweight and asthmatic internet trolls crawled out from under their bridges and sent the internet into meltdown by crying out #whynotdyingfetus. Well after announcing the other headliners Linkin Park and Aerosmith plus support acts Rob Zombie, Fall Out Boy and Alter Bridge Download met the trolls head on and responded:

‘Why not Dying Fetus?’ you asked. We say ‘Why the hell not?”

Download Festival Promoter, Andy Copping

So the trolls got what they asked for (but knowing trolls not something they really ever wanted), Download listened and made it happen.

John Gallagher – Guitar and Vocals for Dying Fetus comments:

“The people have spoken and now it’s time to piss in the mainstream! This started as a joke but has turned into something truly incredible! Never under estimate the power of the internet. Big thanks to all our undying fans for making this happen and for the promoters of Download for having the courage to invite us on the fest! Cheers!”.

If you haven’t heard Dying Fetus before you can listen to their latest album Reign Supreme in its entirety on their Bandcamp Page.

Download Festival takes place 13th-15th June 2014 and the line up so far looks like this:
