Hard Rock Hell 2015, aptly titled ‘House of Horrors’, which is the 9th cycle of the winter music festival have announced heavy metal titans, Saxon back into their realm of mayhem thanks to popular demand from the HRH Fans. It will be 5 years since their last visit and this year’s set will be a 2 hour jaw dropper. With a mammoth back catalogue that stretches back to 1976.
Joining Saxon will be 80’s all-female NWOBHM Vets, Rock Goddess, who have recently enjoyed a positive resurgence and are looking forward to gracing the stage in front of the HRH faithful.
They will both be joined by another band who have been ordered in by popular demand, the unstoppable Black Spiders who are a particular favourite of mine and can currently be seen gracing stages all across the world.
HRH are renowned for plucking some gems out of far flung territories and the first one to be announced this year with a huge injection of Psychedelia are Swedish Heroes Skanska Mord. They will be joined by Swedish bretheren Riot Horse. Check out their track Medicine Man below.
Completing the first announcement are Outlaw Biker Rockers, Pig Iron who have just signed to sister label, Off Yer Rocka Recordings. These boys are well worth checking out if you are a fan of the almighty riff.
Hard Rock Hell 9: House of Horrors will be held in the usual location at Hafan y Mor Haven site in Phwellhi, Gwynedd, North Wales from the 12th to 15th November.
If you have not been before make sure you get down there this year as it is one of the highlights of my calendar. There is just something about a Rock and Metal festival at the ends of the earth, in the middle of winter on a holiday camp that creates a certvery unique festival experience. There is always great bands, great people and a whole lotta fun to be had.
Day Passes have now been released and can be booked @ www.hardrockhell.com/tickets

The brand new single ‘Rising’, out January 19th 2015
New CD ‘We Are The Brave’ out Feb 16th 2015
Following on from their hugely successful debut album ‘Tear Me Down’, young UK four piece Skarlett Riot return with the riff-packed, hood laden ‘We Are The Brave’.
Due for release February 16th, 2015, ‘We Are The Brave’ is a hard hitting, collection of songs; still packed with the memorable choruses and outstanding vocals the fans have come to expect.
Prior to ‘We Are The Brave’ the band release the powerful single ‘Rising’ on January 19th. The band have filmed a video clip accompany the release which will be hitting the screens via Scuzz and Kerrang TV in the New Year.
The band released a lyric video for the stand-alone single ‘House Of Cards’ (check it out below).
The band will be hitting the road in 2015 in support of ‘We Are The Brave’, and have recently confirmed they will be touring with Ozzy Osbourne/Firewind guitarist Gus G and will be opening for the legendary Kamelot at their special ‘one night only’ show in London.
It’s fair to say that Skarlett Riot don’t lack confidence. As anyone that’s had the pleasure of witnessing this young four-piece live will attest to.
In an already jam-packed career Skarlett Riot have wowed audiences at Download (earning a 4K live review from Kerrang!) and Bloodstock, and have shared stages across the UK with the likes of Wednesday 13, D-A-D, Reckless Love, Heaven’s Basement, Periphery, Firewind, Black Spiders, Edguy, Taking Dawn, L.A Guns, Glamour Of The Kill, Crashdiet, Vains Of Jenna, Deaf Havana, Francesqa plus many more.
Formed back in 2010, this female-fronted band were soon taking their local scene by storm with their powerful, riff-led songs, blending melody and grit with a muscular garage rock’n’roll backbone. Add to that an ear for infectious hooks, and you have a band that not only has bags of attitude but the songs to back them up!
The band’s debut EP, the critically acclaimed “Villain”, set the benchmark high and led to glowing praise within the rock community; Big Cheese, Kerrang, Powerplay, Rocksound were all glowing in their praise. The band released a music video in support of the EP which hit rotation on Scuzz and Kerrang TV which led to the band landed a slot at the legendary Download festival where the band were invited to open the Pepsi Max stage. A chance they grabbed with both hands and earnt themselves another 4K review in Kerrang, as well as a place in Scuzz TV’s ‘Top 40 Bands Who Rocked Download’ piece.

So Ross and I went down to the Cambridge Junction on Tuesday night to see the awesome Black Star Riders with The Dead Daisies supporting. I tell you what, there was certainly some talent in the house that night with a mixture of current and ex members of INXS, Guns N’ Roses, The Rolling Stones, The Cult, Alice Cooper, Ted Nugent, Whitesnake, Megadeth, Dokken, The Almighty and Thin Lizzy. It certainly showed through as both The Dead Daises and Black Star Riders really got the crowd going and both bands got an amazing reception and it seemed that the crowd didn’t want either band to stop playing.
The Dead Daisies are a supergroup with a bit of a revolving door policy when it comes to members including a guest appearance on the album by guitar legend Slash. On stage on Tuesday were the current band members:
Jon Stevens (INXS) – Vox
Richard Fortus (Guns n’ Roses) – Lead Guitar
Dizzy Reed (Guns n’ Roses) – Keys
Daryl Jones (The Rolling Stones) – Bass
Charley Drayton (The Cult) – Drums
David Lowy (Mink) – Rhythm Guitar
The Dead Daisies on stage at the Cambridge Junction
Their self titled album is superb and was on heavy rotation until I lent it to Ross to check out. On stage they were even better, full of grooves and riffs and clearly enjoying themselves. They worked through almost the entire album plus played a couple of new songs that they had not played on stage before so it seems they are already working on a second album, not bad for a side project. When they finished their set, the crowd went crazy and received a headline worthy ovation.
Black Star Riders entered the stage starting off with the title track from their album “All Hell Breaks Loose”. Ricky Warrick looked like an Irish Biker and commanded the stage like one while the rest of the band looked there usual cool selves especially Scott who looked like the rock royalty he is – cool as a cucumber even while pulling off some extraordinary solos.
The band worked through a set that was a mix of material from their album plus a selection of Thin Lizzy greatest hits just as you would expect. The crowd drank it up and sang and grooved along for the entire 2 hour set. Drummer Jimmy DeGrasso (ex Megadeth, Alice Cooper, Dokken and more) really caught my it was like his arms were separated from the rest of him, pulling off some amazing playing while looking like he was hardly moving and displaying the biggest grin throughout the entire set.
It was a great night and Ross got the opportunity to interview guitarist Damon Johnson which he will play on the show this Friday so tune in to Rock into the Weekend from 10pm on Friday to hear that exclusive interview. As always you can listen on 104fm, online at http://www.hcrfm.co.uk or via the TuneIn app on your smart phone or tablet.
As for me, I won’t be on the show this Friday as I am just about to set off on the Highway to Hell – Hard Rock Hell that is, where I will get the opportunity to watch Black Star Riders all over again as well as the likes of Airbourne, The Answer, Tracer, Black Spiders, Skindred, Tygers of Pan Tang, The Treatment and Grifter, I will be back next week though with more great interviews.
Turn on, Tune in and Rock out!
